What Does Film Do?

  • Visible Light Transmitted (VLT) is how dark tint appears, e.g. 3M's FX-30 will have a VLT of ~30%
  • Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER) is the amount of heat is absorbed by the film
  • Visible Light Rejected is just that, 'light rejected.' Mirrored reflective films have a higher percentage of VLR compared to dark-hued films

FAQs

Why choose 3M window film?

3M invented window film more than 50 years ago and it’s been the industry leader ever since. 3M makes unbeatable solar, security, decorative and automotive films. Plus, it offers some of the best warranties available.

What is window film?

Window film is a laminate of strong polyester and/or metalized coatings bonded by adhesives. There is a scratch resistant coating on one side, and a mounting adhesive layer and a protective release liner on the other side. When the release liner is removed, the side of the film with the adhesive is applied to the interior surface of the glass.

How does window film work?

Solar radiation from the sun is divided into three components: visible light we can see, and infrared and ultraviolet rays that we can only feel. As solar radiation strikes a piece of glass, window film blocks UV rays to regulate the level of light and heat that passes through. The amount of heat and light rejected is all dependent on the type of window film selected.

How does window film affect my room and my view?

Window film can be clear, colored or patterned to blend with various design schemes. Various thicknesses are available for solar, safety or security applications. The type of film you choose will determine the way it affects your view, but rest assured that it will make the room more comfortable. Window films can also help prevent glare.

Can window film be installed on odd shaped windows?

NWFL Tint provides excellent service and experienced installers are able to cut film patterns for all window shapes and sizes.

What are the commercial advantages?

In commercial applications, window film typically pays back its cost in energy savings in fewer than three years. Not only can you expect lower electricity bills, but window film can also help extend the life of your HVAC system. Plus, it creates a more comfortable environment for your employees and customers.

FAQs

Do you have products to ensure safety?

Made with heavy duty polyester bonded by strong adhesives, security window film provides a powerful barrier that helps hold glass in place should an impact occur. No matter what the source of impact – natural disaster, crime or accident — security window film will help control and even eliminate the danger and damage caused by broken glass.

Can I improve privacy in my office from street-facing windows?

Privacy is greatly dependent on your lighting situation and window layout. NWFL Tint will advise you on how much privacy can be achieved while maintaining good light levels. Often windows can be made completely one way.

Our glass is already tinted. Can window film be applied?

There are some restrictions on what film can be applied to tinted glass but we can substantially reduce your incoming heat and glare.

Does film get installed on the inside or outside of the glass?

All automotive windows have the film installed on the inside of the glass. Generally all commercial and residential films are applied on the inside of the building's windows.

What is the life expectancy of window film?

The life expectancy of window film is dependent upon multiple variables (climate, exposure to sun, etc…). The average life expectancy is ten years and beyond; and, many customers have had 3M™ Window Film on their windows for over twenty years.

Do the automotive films have metal in them?

No. All our films by 3M are non-metalized. Ceramic films were made to be an alternative to previously manufactured metalized films, but today the most noticeable feature of ceramic film is its reflective aspect to the outside of your windows.
